Active acne or old scars: which should be addressed first?

Ask the clinician to distinguish active breakouts from pigment changes and scars, then plan each stage of care.

Sort the visible findings

A new inflamed bump can leave a flat dark mark or an indented scar. Marie Jé offers different Aerolase services for active acne and existing scars. Ask the clinician to point out which findings are new lesions, which are pigment changes, and which are structural scars. A treatment named for scars should not be assumed to prevent continuing breakouts by itself.

Control the source of new marks

The AAD advises treating acne to prevent worsening and scarring. If lesions remain active, discuss a complete acne plan, including whether standard medical care is needed. Ask when scar treatment could begin without new lesions continuing to change the area being measured. Discussing this sequence before paying for scar care can help you avoid treating old marks while active acne continues to create new ones.

Define a second-stage goal

Once acne is better controlled, review the scar type and choose an outcome such as softer texture or reduced contrast. Ask whether the scar service, another procedure, or observation is most appropriate. Get a fresh quote and consent for that separate goal; a completed acne series does not automatically establish candidacy for scar work.

Questions and answers

Can one laser session address both?

The clinic names separate services. Ask which target is being treated in each visit and how success will be assessed.
